Couples Counseling

How is Couples Therapy different from Individual Therapy?

  • Individual Therapy helps a person develop insight into their relationship with their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors.

  • Couples Therapy focuses on the relationship between two people, with specific attention to improving communication while helping each individual understand how their psychological habits show up in the relationship.

Who offers Couples Therapy at Madison Behavioral Health?

  • Andy Cooper, LMFT-IT, has specialized training in Couples Therapy

What type of Couples Therapy does MBH offer?

  • Andy Cooper has specialized training in Emotional Focused Therapy (EFT) and Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy.

  • Emotional Focused Therapy is a brief model of couples therapy that seeks to improve attachment security and intimacy in a relationship by helping couples understand problematic patterns of relating to each other. They learn to see the pattern as the problem instead of their partner. EFT has a strong evidence base and most people find it both easy to deploy and quickly helpful.

  • Internal Family Systems therapy for couples takes the idea that each person’s mind is composed of different “parts” that are often in internal conflict with each other. Instead of blaming your partner, you learn to manage your own inner protective and reactive parts to build deep empathy and stop conflict loops internally and in the couple. IFS helps each person become self-led, which allows for healthier communication.

Couples Therapy and Family Therapy are typically paid for out-of-pocket

  • Most health insurance plans do not cover Couples or Family Therapy because it is not considered a medical condition but instead a relationship improvement service.

  • Sometimes a person’s health insurance can be used to pay for work involving a couple or a family if that person is experiencing symptoms of a mental health disorder due to the problem in the couple or family.

How long are the sessions and how much do they cost?

  • Each session is 55-minutes long and costs $150

  • Our sliding scale also applies. Please inquire if cost is a treatment barrier for you.
